Paro holds the international airport and the trail to Tiger's Nest. Thimphu brings museums, markets and contemporary Bhutan into the picture. Punakha drops into a warmer valley of rice fields and rivers, with its great dzong at the confluence. Together they form a coherent route rather than a checklist of stops. Longer journeys can cross toward Gangtey and the central valleys, where road time increases but so does the sense of space. Short walks between villages, farm visits and time with a knowledgeable guide often reveal more than adding another distant overnight. Choose the hotel level and walking pace early. Both shape the trip more than a long list of inclusions.
