Everest Region Trek

The Everest region, also known as the Khumbu, is one of Nepal’s most renowned trekking destinations. Located within Sagarmatha National Park, the region combines dramatic Himalayan landscapes, glaciers, high mountain passes, Buddhist monasteries and traditional Sherpa settlements.

Everest Base Camp, situated at 5,364 metres, is the best-known trekking destination in the region. The classic route normally passes through Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep before reaching the base camp beside the Khumbu Glacier. Although the summit of Mount Everest is not clearly visible from the base camp itself, the surrounding views of the Khumbu Icefall and neighbouring peaks are impressive.

Many Everest Base Camp itineraries also include a hike from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar. Its upper viewpoint is approximately 5,644 metres above sea level and offers one of the region’s finest close-range views of Mount Everest, along with Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and other peaks of the Khumbu Himalaya.

Trekking in the Everest region is not limited to the standard base camp route. Travellers can also explore the Gokyo Lakes, cross high passes such as Cho La, Renjo La and Kongma La, visit quieter Sherpa villages or choose shorter, luxury and helicopter-assisted itineraries.
