A classic plateau journey starts gently in Lhasa, where the first days are deliberately light. From there the road can run past Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse to Shigatse, continue toward Everest's north side, or turn west for the much longer approach to Kailash. These are not interchangeable add-ons; each changes the driving days and altitude profile. Monasteries are part of the living landscape rather than isolated attractions.
