Annapurna region or the Annapurna Conservation Area, located in west-central Nepal, is the largest and the first protected area in Nepal. The Annapurna Conservation Area spans 7,629 square kilometers and is bounded by the dry alpine desert of Mustang and the Tibetan (China border to the north, the Kali Gandaki River to the west, the Marsyangdi Valley to the east and the foothills of northern Pokhara Valley to the south. This conservation area in Nepal is very interesting as it encompasses Annapurna massif, a home to the 10th highest mountain in the world, Annapurna I (8,091m). This region also got its name from this mountain. Additionally, the region is home to the world’s deepest gorge- the Kali Gandaki Gorge- as well as one of the highest-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, Tilicho Lake. It also boasts one of the largest rhododendron forests, located in Ghorepani as well as one of the most important pilgrimage sites revered by both Hindus and Buddhists -Muktinath.
